Director of Recruitment and Outreach, University of Michigan Public Allies Metro Detroit

Currently, Markyshia serves as the Director of Recruitment and Outreach for Public Allies Metro Detroit. In 2013 when she joined the team she served as a Program Manager with a focus on Training and Learning. Markyshia also played a role in establishing and managing partnerships with Nonprofit Partner Organizations.  

Markyshia’s experience includes work in the Human Service field. She started her professional career as an Adoption Specialist with the Children’s Center of Wayne County where she was employed in 2001 and in 2004. She successfully facilitated over 50 adoptions and trained staff and perspective foster/adoptive parents.  After working at the Children’s Center she moved to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and worked for a local authority as a Family Placement Officer. Markyshia was a part of a group of social workers who were recruited to do social work in the United Kingdom. Markyshia was offered the highest appointment and was the youngest and only social worker from America placed in the department.

When Markyshia returned from the UK she gained employment at Wayne State University at the Center for Urban Studies as a Research Assistant/Program Manager. Markyshia’s responsibility included managing the evaluation of City of Detroit nonprofit organizations that received Neighborhood Operating Funds. Her responsibilities included supervising a full staff, site visits, reporting, and training nonprofits on effectively documenting outcomes and outputs.

Markyshia also has experience in foster care and juvenile justice.

Markyshia is passionate about social justice and earned a Master’s of Arts Degree in Social Justice from Marygrove College where her work focused on the School to Prison Pipeline and the Education Achievement Authority. Markyshia has a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Family Community Services with a focus on youth and a concentration in diversity.
