Benjamin A. Johnson

Assistant Director of Recreation, City of Louisville Parks and Recreation

Benjamin A. Johnson, Jr. (Ben) is the Assistant Director of Recreation for Louisville Parks and Recreation.  In this role he oversees 16 different recreational facilities offering diverse programming ranging from A to Z (Arts to Zumba) for people of all ages and abilities. This is Ben’s second stint with Louisville Metro having previously served as the Assistant Director of Youth Development.

Continuing his commitment to bettering the lives of young people and Black Males in particular, Ben has created several unique programs in Louisville. Among them are the “Youth Chats with LMPD” where local police officers come to the community centers to dialogue with young people; an agreement with Youth Detention allowing Recreation staff inside twice a month to provide recreational programming to the residents; and a partnership with the local school district which allowed them to open a satellite office in one of the community centers he oversees in an urban area. This location allows families much easier access to educational resources.

Ben has served as a mentor to numerous young Black Males in individual and group settings. He participates on a regular basis in programs, reading events, workshops, panel discussions, etc.  Any opportunity that presents itself to be around and work with / for young Black Males, Ben does all he can to be there. As a part of his personal and professional development, Ben enjoys public speaking and has served as a Master of Ceremonies, keynote speaker and workshop presenter on numerous occasions at local, regional and national meetings, conventions, etc.

A graduate of Florida A&M University, Ben also spends a lot of time supporting his alma mater and promoting other HBCUs. Married with one son, Ben is proud to be a “Jr.” as well as having a son who is also his namesake.
