Health & Healing Strategies for an Extraordinary New Year

by Dr. Phyllis Hubbard

Did you know that our current celebrations of Christmas (including celebrating the birth of Christ) are based on the Winter Solstice?

The Winter Solstice is a very powerful time of the year. Think about how things grow in nature.  A seed needs to be surrounded by soil in complete darkness. That darkness offers the seed the proper environment for a transformation to occur which educes that seed’s potential and allows it to evolve and grow. The same can be true for the seeds you decide to plant during this powerful time of year

The Winter Solstice occurs December 21st – 24th. During this time, Earth’s movement towards light stops for 4 days. On the 5th day, the light of the world is reborn (hence we celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25th, even though Jesus was technically born in October). This message has been lost in the midst of our mad shopping rushes, food and alcohol binges and family drama.  From a spiritual perspective, the Winter Solstice is the optimal time for spiritual rejuvenation, growth and revitalization. What we choose to do during the Winter Solstice will be magnified because the environment is perfect to nurture whatever seeds we plant at that time. What physical, emotional, mental and spiritual seeds will you choose to plant?

Tap Into Your Power: Educe the Extraordinary Within

Here are some ways that we can tap into our power:

  • Be still – practice silence (no speaking at all) for at least 2 days during the solstice.
  • Practice the Radiant Breath Awareness Exercise.
  • Review what is working in your life and look at how you can expand your perceptions.
  • Review what is NOT working in your life and look at actions, foods, people, relationships that you need to shift or let go of.
  • Cleanse your physical body and nourish your spirit with this gentle, nourishing liver/gallbladder cleanse. Your liver is extremely sensitive to emotions and is most affected by imbalanced emotions. From a broader perspective, your liver rules our ability to plan your life and your gallbladder rules your capacity to make decisions. This is why the Winter Solstice is the optimal time for to nourish your liver.
  • Remove/transmute toxic emotions.
  • Increase the amount of oxygen that you breathe into your body through breath/movement exercises such as Qigong.

When we breathe air into our lungs, we are also breathing in solar energy which includes radio, ultraviolet, infrared, gamma rays and much more. We get the entire spectrum. Oxygen carries this energy to every part of our body.

Asking the Question ...

What if we celebrated the holidays with mindfulness and a fresh vibrancy? Many of us go into machine mode, regurgitating the same rote actions every year as if we are on autopilot. What if for just one holiday, we flip the script? What would happen if we took this time to get more connected to the truest part of ourselves? And if we find this idea to be impossible, do we have the courage to ask why we feel this way? Are we willing to challenge past perceptions. This year, I encourage you to be a creative pioneer. In the grand scheme of things, what is 4 days of concentrated health and healing practices out of your entire life?
