CBMA and Education Post Launch "Black Male Educators Speak"

To help young Black men and boys achieve their fullest promise and potential, the Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA) has put a stake in the ground around high school excellence to ensure they’re positioned to graduate high school ready to succeed in college, career and their communities. 

A key indicator found to help determine that success? Engagement.

As part of October's "Black Male Re-Imagined Month," CBMA, in partnership with Education Post, has launched Black Male Educators Speak, a new video series focusing on the stories of four Black male teachers in four different cities and exploring the innovative teaching methods they use to engage Black students.

Throughout the rest of the month, tune in to see these educators from Philadelphia, Detroit, New York, and Oakland share how they’re able to connect with their Black male students’ personal and cultural experiences to encourage academic achievement.

In the fourth and final chapter in our series, we feature Bankh Akintunde, a native of Oakland and the Manhood Development program instructor at West Oakland Middle School.

In the third video of our series, we feature Edmund Adjapong, Ph.D., a native of the Bronx and an assistant professor of education at Seton Hall University. Dr. Adjapong is a former middle school science teacher and has focused both his academic research and his classroom practice on using hip-hop to engage students in STEM.

In the second video, follow Detroit Teacher -- and one of CBMA's Building Beloved Community Leadership Fellows -- Quan Neloms as he uses Hip-Hop Literacy to engage his students and the community.

Philly Educator Gerald Dessus takes us through his 8th grade course on Social Justice in this first video that launched the series. You can read more about Gerald's work and commitment to Black male academic achievement here.
