CBMA Health & Healing Strategies: Selling the Untouchable

by Dr. Phyllis Hubbard

Many years ago, I was having a lively conversation with a small group of colleagues. At one point, one of my colleagues surprisingly retorted “why are you always so happy?” I quickly responded “why are you always so grumpy?” There was an uncomfortable pause. And then I continued, “I have had enough of misery. I have a Ph.D. in misery. While I can’t control challenges from coming my way, from now on, I’ve decided to be a student of bliss.” The group raised their eyebrows as if a new pathway of thought had emerged, and I was grateful to have helped to shift the energy upward.

CBMA created the BMA Health and Healing Strategies initiative to implement a school and broader community-based wellness strategy (with the Oakland and Sacramento City Unified School Districts serving as two of our lead partners). While this statement sounds good on paper, I want to make clear that underneath it all, what we are really selling are gateways to  the untouchable.

The untouchable refers to the intangible … pathways to awakening, the evolution of our consciousness, the connection to our true selves, pathways to self love, healing and overcoming addictions, learning to see things as they are (allowing our eyes to be windows instead of projectors)...

Why? Because the health of our people (including you and me) is in dire need of strengthening untouchables like self-empowerment and efficacy development. We can’t heal what is “out there” until we heal from within.  Our pain, struggles and addictions are often caused by our lack of connection to these untouchables and a lack of awareness around how to victoriously emerge from its negative effects. As uncomfortable as facing these truths may seem, to avoid them will simply bring more compounded misery. So how do we get from where we are to where we want to be?

We can’t heal what is “out there” until we heal from within. Our pain, struggles and addictions are often caused by our lack of connection to these untouchables and a lack of awareness around how to victoriously emerge from its negative effects.

As we embark upon what I am presenting as a beautiful journey to radiance, I invite you to take a moment before, during and after any challenging situation to breathe, pause and then act/speak. This seemingly simple, yet powerful strategy helps us to make the choice that serves our highest good and contains the seed to our freedom and joy.

Taking a moment to breathe slowly and deeply FIRST helps us to tap into our sense of power, confidence, empowerment, identity, self worth and more. The beauty of the process is that we can all learn, grow and heal while re-writing a more empowering story of our lives.
